For some reason when doing a search pdf and word documents feature rather high in the search results (same score as other plain html pages).

Is there any way (in search file?) that I can modify this and make these pages appear lower in the search results?

pdf and word docs are ranked the same as any html page. If the score is the same they will come out in walk sequence (the order the records appear in the database).

You can adjust the rank settings on the advanced search form to change what's most and least important in the rank. If you have the latest 4.3 scripts you can easily make permanent changes to the ranking by adjusting the search settings in the profile.
