latest dowalk only crawls domains

Is it just me or did you put untested scripts on the websites one more time?

I had to download the dowalk script since I was getting problems with test query. 71 websites and crawled only 3 domains (out of 6) with 3700 pages returned. Not a single error on walk report.I had to switch back to 5.0.6 and it worked.

Note: Why don't you keep previous working versions of dowalk/search on the websites?

We'll need more details about your problem. The latest script fixes some problems with "stay under" not working so older scripts may have gone places they shouldn't have. And "extra domains" were being ignored. 5.0.12 fixes those problems.

webinator enterprise version 5.0.12 (dowalk/search) running on windows 2003 server standard.

Was running 5.0.10, 51 websites into two categories (50,1) crawled 150,000+ pages. Not satisfied with the search results at all but the number of pages as expected. Decided to remove keywords and did remakeindex as per our chat. The profile was set to refresh walk every hour once it completed initial run, so it would do a refresh walk per schedule some time after I did remakeindex. Got abandoned walk error messages and didn't think keywords got removed. Also had timeout problems after remakeindex.

I had 5.0.6 dowalk somewhere saved earlier (I don't like to keep up every time you put a new version out there if it works for me,and I think most people don't as well. Also looking at the dowalk script revision history who would know you fixed issues with stay-under and extra domains !!! It looks that between 5.0.6 and 5.0.12 you have only done cosmetic updates that wouldn't affect spider operation at all)

Usually I postpone adding new sites untill Friday since during the weekends the walk is very fast and I can get 199,999 pages crawled in 48-60 hours.

The only thing I did is to add some websites to the base url (no changes in extra domain, 6 extra domains) and added them to one of the two categories as well. I usually check on walk status during weekends and I noticed that It started OK (saying started 1 on x, 2 on y...), but on the walk status page you would see that it is crawling only domains (3 out of 6, one at the top, one in the upper middle and one in the lower middle). I had 4 servers,2 threads and it started the 1,2,3 on first 3 websites and 4th on rest of them (but didn't really brought any pages). The domain crawl wasn't complete at all. Kind of stopped as if it finished the walk without a single error (usually you would expect to see some errors with some of the websites).

The bottom line is, there is definately issue with this latest script (it worked until 5.0.10). I haven't done a single change after downloading the 5.0.12 scripts. The only change was the addition of 15 websites into baseurl and one of the category.

I would also like to point out that I hope you are right about the walker going places it shouldn't. Because the search results we are getting are almost useless (unless you have search engine savvy users).However, I wonder how the walker can go to places it shouldn't after you tell it to respect robots and meta tags, do hours of tedius manual refinement identifying folders/single pages on websites you don't want to crawl and put them in the exclusion list (it worked for me) and expect the walker to go get everything except what you don't want.

You also need to outline changes in scripts(in view source on website, in some highly visible color) so one can decide whether he/she absolutely need to upgrade or not.

BTW, in 5.0.10, I din't wanted to 'stay under' and my extra domains were working fine.

Tell me if I follow correctly. You added some base urls to an existing profile then did a refresh walk. It only walked some of the new sites. Could you provide urls to a couple of the sites that didn't walk?

With version 5 the "dowalk" and "webinator" admin scripts are combined into one download called "dowalk". That has the side effect of having 2 change logs in the same file. The change log at the end is that for webinatoradmin. dowalk's changelog is in the middle of the file. Look for the first </script> in the file to get to the dowalk changelog.

The stay-under problem didn't make it wander off to incorrect sites. It allowed it to wander out to areas of the site above the base url.

Let me appologize first for saying there weren't any errors. I had verbosity set to 0 and that why I din't notice. But I still believe something went wrong with this new script. It could be very well just me. But I tried 3 times from home with new profile each time and it fetched almost the same no. of pages every time. So, I had to run to my office and change the script to 5.0.6 and its running nicely (not staying under and fetching exta domains)

No, Whenever I add new sites, I would create a new profile by copying the settings of existing profile. Then add the new sites to base url and one of the categories. That way, it would be completely fresh. Once the walk is successfully completed,I would delete the old profile.

I am sorry about not noticing the script revisions in the middle of the dowalk script. But, please answer the following for me:

If we resolve this issue (my settings are below) can I just then download the latest dowalk script and run refresh? (Also I always stop monitor and usaully kill everything before I replace the dowalk script, what are the steps when upgrading the dowalk script and how important it is to keep the search script the same version as dowalk as I have done a lot of modifications to the search script)

So, it was 'new' profile, 'new' walk and latest 5.0.12 script. It didn't even walked the sites it walked in the old profile (the one I copied the settings from). I noticed immediately the charasteristic that it was only walking the domains, a single domain would get about 4000 pages in 5.0.10 and it walked three domains and brought 3300 pages. When looked at the walk report you wouldn't notice a single error. It followed through very successfully(removing commonality, creating spell checker directories.......)

I do understand what 'stay under' does and we wanted to not 'stay under'. We wanted to get everything from a base url except the folders we exclude. I would also specify the folders to walk, but if the folders reference another site area, we want to go there and that is why not 'stay under'. We wanted to do a sort of free crawl (that is why don't go offsite)

My settings:

right now I have dowalk 5.0.6 and search 5.0.11 (I would usually prefer to manually update my search script so I didn't download the 5.0.12 when I downloaded 5.0.12 dowalk). It is Sunday 2 PM and the walk is still running(as expected) with 78,146 pages fetched (I expect to get to full 199,999 page limit this time)

Please also indicate what base urls are not being walked. Or if it's particular pages on a site please indicate a couple of those and the pages that link to them and were walked.

It will only visit (and possibly walk) extra domains if something from your main sites refers to them.

In 5.0.6 if you pause walk then you will see that it will start with top base url and depending on the servers it will only start crawling that many urls.5.0.12 starts no.2 all all of them simulteneously.

Does charset has anything to do with it, in walk and search settings I have charset set to ISO-8859-1 (two places in walk and one place in search)

Don't mind ncua. What the hell is wrong with the rest of the websites. It doesn't even create catagories on these 2 pages.

If 5.0.12 has no problems then how come I have issues with 5.0.12 and 5.0.6 works fine (BTW, when I stoped walk today in 5.0.6 it gave me lots of errors in removecommon. All of them referred to size to big for some function xyz(). I forgot to copy the exact error message.

Please post 5.0.10 or 5.0.11 scripts on websites if possible.

When would we be able to trust walker to do the most basic operation it supposed to do (go out there any fetch everything except what we restricted?)

You shouldn't have to kill anything except, on windows, things directly using dowalk like running walks. Just replace the script, and possibly remove the .vtx file if you have perm problems.
