Database bloat

Hey Thunderstone Folks --

First, let me apologize for what will be the length of this email.

Second, the way things are set up at work is that we have a master database that sits behind the firewall that has vortex scripts that push content out to our two front end database boxes that also have vortex scripts that listen for the update, delete, and insert commands coming from the master server. All works well and all the boxes have the same number of records and the records are modified as they should be.

However, one of the two front end database servers (let's call it BLOATY) for some reason the supporting database files are close to four times the size of it's twin server (let's call it NORMAL) and BLOATY has 3 times the number of files (mostly BTR files). The db size of the NORMAL server is identical to the MASTER server; BLOATY is four times bigger.

This happened once before about 3 months ago and my fix was to copy the database over from NORMAL and everything was fine...but I think BLOATY was doing it's thing and slowly filling up the hard drive.

My guess is there is either some sort of extra logging going on or an index has gone wacky.

I looked at SYSSTATISTICS but didn't see anything that stood out to me (included below).

Can you shed any light on what might be going on?

It looks as if you do have some temporary indexes left lying around. If you do a select from SYSINDEX you should see which files and indexes are currently in use. If there are groups of files with the T#### prefix, especially old ones, that do not have a corresponding row in SYSINDEX they can be removed.
