disk space

Post by Thunderstone »

Is there a way to configure or manage the database to keep the total
storage space to a minimum? "View context" shows that the complete
page is stored for each url, and I was wondering if this is
necessary. Is that data needed after an index is created? Or is it
needed every time the index is updated?

Just grasping at straws for a solution to pack more punch per
megabyte.

Thanks.

In many systems using Webinator the cost of data acquisition is
higher than the cost of disk space to hold the data. Context
is nice feature when the file is too big to read in one gulp too.
In the current version there is no way to remove the source ASCII field.

You may wish to wait for the new version. There are some options in this
version that will make it easier to reconfigure Webinator in this manner.
More about this release will be out soon. Even then, we'll probably advise
against dropping the field after indexing. In big databases, getting the
data back if you mess up an index is too time consuming to warrant the risk.
