Last night we had an issue with our search appliance where it became unreachable. Searches would get a "page cannot be displayed" error (the browser-generated error when a site cannot be reached, NOT the Thunderstone search timeout page) and we could not get to the appliance web management interface using either the hostname or the numerical IP. After about an hour we called our hosting provider and had them power cycle the appliance, and it came back up. I was able to ping the device the entire time.
The one thing that stands out in the error logs is this kind of message:
[Wed Dec 26 21:41:13 2007] (717) Too many connections (MaxClients 32
exceeded)
There are about 90 of them during the time the appliance was unreachable (roughly 9pm - 10:30pm) and about 180 during the whole day. Before yesterday there were hardly any of these messages (about 10 for all of December). I'm not sure if the maxclients problem is more of a cause or a symptom.
Our appliance is working now, but we'd like to know the best way to figure out why it froze up and prevent it from doing so in the future.
Thanks,
Rob
