Odd Possessives

Post by legedza.henry »

We've come across this odd situation, and we were wondering if you could provide some explanation or additional information?

With Word Forms set to "plural and possessives", we get the following results coming up in a search results:

Search for: Island, Islande, Islandy, Islandies all return the same results as for Island
Search for: Limestone, Limestony, Limeston, Limestons, Limestonies all return the same results as for Limestone
Search for: Family, Famil, Families, Familes, Famils, Famil's all return the same results as for Family

However…

Search for: Mallee, Malley, Malleies, Mallee's all return the same results as for Mallee, but Malles, Mallees, Malle say that no documents match the query.

When Word Forms is switched to Exact Match these do not occur.

Can you help?

Mallee doesn't strip down at all so shorter prefixes don't match. And mallees strips to malle.

Except Mallee has to strip down otherwise we wouldn't get "malley" or "malleies".

I would understand it if all of those variations stripped back to malle and therefore didn't work, but some do and some don't, whereas with "family", everything strips back to "famil" and gets all of the plural endings added to it.

Just trying to understand the inconsistancy... whether it's because of the "ee" at the end of mallee or something else.

With "Plural and possessive" these:
Mallee Malley Malleies Mallee's Malles Mallees Malle
strip to:
Malle Malle Malle Malle Mal Mall Mall

With the "defsuffrm" setting a single trailing vowel is removed, which is what causes some of the differences. It allows Mallee to match Mallies, but after es is removed from Mallees to get to Malle it then removes the trailing vowel leaving Mall.

defsuffrm also strips one of the trailing double l's from "malles" to get "mal".
