Interpreting Memory Usage

Post by robert.vreeland »

The memory usage info from our System Information screen is below. Are the low Free and high Used numbers something to be concerned about? The Cached number is almost as big as the Used - does that mean that most of the Used is not really Used, but Cached?

Type: RAM MB
Total: 32190
Used: 31394
Free: 256
Shared: 0
Buffers: 471
Cached: 30427

Correct, not a problem. Used includes Cached. Most of your memory is used by disk cache. That will be reduced as needed when programs need more ram. Basically the system tries to make the best use of all of the available ram.
