When creating a profile make it as a copy of "-Meta search defaults-" instead of "-Defaults". Then enter the profiles you wish to search (use 127.0.0.1 for the Host IP since you have one appliance). Then when you search that profile the appliance will search all of the listed profiles and merge the results before presenting them to the user.

One issue I found with Meta Search. If a meta search has 11 profiles listed, each Query that a user does against a Meta Search generates 11 queries and a 12th that ranks then against each other. This really taxes the appliance during peak periods. to the point of getting timeout errors. We combined the crawls down to 4 and our response time is very good.
Meta Search is a wonderful feature that we cannot do without. Just wished this was known when we started.

With multiple appliances you can spread the profiles, and therefore the query load, across them.
