Moving to a New Host

Hmmm, where to begin?? Ok, my client, prior to him becoming my client, had a website with Webinator installed and working wonderfully.

He decided to switch hosts (unclear on why) but he did not do his homework and moved his site to a host that does NOT support Webinator.

Enter me ... now I need to find a new host for him that does support the Webinator, and I need to know what, if anything, I need to do to get it working again on the new host.

The site is the same, the URL is the same, all pages within the site are the same, I am just moving it to a host that supports the Webinator.

So ... if I move the whole site to a new host that supports the Webinator, with the Webinator and all of its files still intact, will I need to reinstall, update or take any other action for the Webinator to start working again - or will it just start working as it did before, once the site and all the Webinator files are uploaded to a supporting host??

Also, do *I* need to have Unix or Win2000/NT/XP installed on my own computer to work with the Webinator as long as it is uploaded to a supporting host??

And, when I want to upload new pages to the site in the future, can I update the Webinator to include the new pages in its search results without my own computer being able to support it - as long as I work within the supporting host??

Sorry, I don't know all the technical terms used for the Webinator's functions!! This is my first foray into the world of Webinator!! ;-)

Thanks so much for your help ...

If the OS is the same as the original host the same databases and programs should work. You might need to do a reinstall though, as the paths will likely be different.

It doesn't matter what OS your workstation is running. Anything with a working web browser is fine. All the matters to Webinator is the server.

All of the supported platforms are listed on the free webinator download page. The manual with installation instructions is also online at the webinator tech support page. http://www.webinator.com

Hey Mark,

Great ... thanks for the quick response!

Is there a way I can tell - without asking my client who is more clueless about these things than I am - which OS it ran on in the past?

I've been researching hosts and it seems we have a few choices - and it might be best if I went with the same OS as it ran on before - also, do you have any advice on that?

Have you had better results with one OS over others? I'd appreciate any advice you could offer ...

Thanks, Shirley

Not easy to tell if you don't have that OS around any more and can't run the executables.

I would suggest abandoning the old walk data. It's stale and probably easily reacquired by walking. Just get the latest Webinator that's compatible with your favorite host, keeping in mind that the NT version requires console access to install. All others can be installed from a simple telnet account.

Once installed just do a new walk of the desired data. It's not hard and you'll then know how it was built and be able to make it reproducible.

Uh oh ... Could you translate 'simple telnet account' into laymen's terms please?? ;-)

Thanks again ...

I think "shell account" is the more common terminology. You have to be able to log on to the server to install the software from the command line.
