word roots

Post by mikep »

One of our users searched for "Dana" and it returned 29 documents. None of these documents contained the word "Dana", but they all contained the word "Dan".

Out of curiosity, they searched for "dander" and it returned 2 documents. Neither of these documents contained the word "dander", but they both contained the word "Dan".

If they search for "Dana" in quotes then it returns no documents.

Where is texis getting these synonyms from, and why are they returning different numbers of hits?

They are word forms (roots) not synonyms. It sounds like you have your minwordlen set to 3 with full suffix processing on. In that case "Dan" is considered the root form of dana. Not sure about dander unless you've changed the suffix list (it would be dand with the standard suffix list and minwordlen 3 or more).

Where do I set minwordlen or the suffix list? Can you explain more about this or point me to some documentation? Some other users are complaining about getting different results if they search for a singular or plural search term, so I need to know how rooting works.
