There is a querystring parameter called mode ...
My question is what are all the modes available, and what roles do they have? I know that when I'm "mode=admin" I can see best bet groups, but if I put nothing, they don't show up. Thanks in advance....

mode is unrelated to dropXSL. mode=admin is used for running the "Test Search" from the admin page. It uses the test look & feel instead of live. It provides a link back to the admin interface. And it allows ystem errors to show on the page instead of being hidden in comments. That's about it.
To get your test look and feel settings to work for normal live searches you need to select "apply appearance" on the search settings and update.
For the record dropXSL can be "no" to send back xml and xsl files, "yes" to send back xml without xsl, or "html" to process xml+xsl on the server and send html to the browser. It only applies when result style is XSL stylesheet.
