How much RAM?

Post by tboyer »

We have a fairly large and busy set of Texis applications operating on perhaps 20-30 GB of data, and we're acquiring some new hardware.

The RAM configurations for the hardware we're looking at can be 12GB or 24GB.

My question is, is the 24 GB likely to perform significantly better than 12? Does Texis utilize significant RAM if it's available? Wondering if you have any rules of thumb.

Thanks,

Tom

How much RAM?

There isn't a single easy answer. The biggest benefit to the additional RAM will be from the operating system caching data so it doesn't need to go to disk.

The actual disk usage pattern for your application will really determine the benefits to additional RAM. Depending on the size of the index and how unique the work loads are there may or may not be a significant difference. For example if 80% of the workload only used 9GB of data then 24 GB would not help much. If however that 80% used 13GB of data then there would be a big benefit.

Something to start with would be how much RAM you have now, and how busy are the disks.
