Webinator performance

Do you have any performance numbers on Webinator under Linux?
Especially things like how much disk space is used for the indexes.
How does it compare to the amount of space used by the documents that
were indexed?

The index is about 15-20% the size of the documents. This will be larger
for a small set of documents because of base overhead.

I had a few other questions. Will the Commercial version of
Webinator, allow me to alter the look of the result screens? Also, we
would really like to be able to retrieve our web docs via the file
system. This is mainly because our Web server enforces access rights
and the "gw" program doesn't seem to have a way to authenticate to a
server...

Looks really good though!

The Commercial version will not allow you to completely alter the look.
You must have a full version of Texis in order to receive the
source code to the Webinator search application.

HOWEVER: Are you aware that you can alter the look of the
result page HTML by using the method described in the installation
manual. See below for details.

The second part of your question is a little harder. My suggestion
is that you create public and restricted versions of the Webinator
database and use HTTPD permissions to restrict access to the
private DB. ( This may or may not solve your problem)

Thanks for the kind words!

Look customization:

You may customize the look of the Webinator search form
somewhat by placing extra html files into the webinator
directory. If the file top.html exists it will be placed at the top of
all output pages. If the file bottom.html exists it will be placed
at the bottom of all output pages. The initial search form will
be output in the following order:

top.html
standard search form
bottom.html

Subsequent result pages will be output in the following order:

top.html
standard search form
search results
bottom.html

Ah, is Texis available on Linux systems? Also is there any pricing
information online?

Yes, but our current system has a very different look and feel that
we'd like to keep even if we move to a new system.

Hrm. I think I'm asking a different question. When I'm *creating* the
DB, the gw program contacts our Web server to fetch the URLs. In this
step, the Web server is enforcing some permissions and I'm not sure if
there is a way to allow the gw program to access our files via the Web
server....

Thanks,
Karen
