appliance cdrom mounting fun

Post by rgski »

I've searched throughout the boards to find if anyone else has had issues with mounting a cdrom on an appliance.

First off, both 'gui' methods of mounting a cdrom fail (dowalk-> maintenance and webmin). The reason for failure is the lack of a link to /dev/cdrom from the device.

/etc/fstab has proper entries for the cdrom, and there are two devices listed in the /dev tree for a cdrom (cdu31a and cdu535) both of which are not the cdrom in the appliance.

A quick view of hwconf shows the device to be /dev/hda which mounts fine.

My question would be was the /dev/cdrom link left off the image for a reason or just forgotten? It's obviously nothing major, just an inconvenience.

One last thing before installing these rpms upgrades. Since it is a full appliance upgrade, should the texis->maintenance upgrade function be used or should they be installed by hand?

Thanks

The appliance is a black box. You're not supposed to be poking around the system unless given specific instructions from Thunderstone tech support.

The appliance doesn't use /dev/cdrom for mounting upgrade CD's.

All updates should be done through the Maintenance interface.

Please open a tech support ticket indicating your appliance serial number for help with your cd mounting problem.

I've opened a ticket. Though it appears that I am 'poking around,' I'm trying to diagnose a problem with the interfaces provided. The Maintenance Interface will not mount the cdrom. Nor will Webmin. The Maintenance Interface fails with a sudo error (lack of /dev/cdrom) and Webmin fails due to not finding /dev/cdrom.

I fully understand that it is a 'closed system.' However, due to a unique environment, there are certain concessions that have been made.

FWIW, once I mounted the cdrom manually, the Maintenance Interface could see the packages fine.

If I should not use the boards and route every issue through the ticketing system, let me know so I will go that route only next time.

Please use the ticket system for low level subjects or identify yourself when using the message board. The root password is not generally supplied so anyone knowing anything about the innards of the appliance is a hacker suspect. Sorry if I came across too harshly.

Not harsh at all. No harm, no foul. I'll wait for a response from the ticket. I'd like to know if the problem was with the link or the apps pointing to the wrong location. Or if I missed a config setting.

Thanks again Mark.

The old update procedure can't find the cdrom on some of the larger appliances with SCSI raid. More recent versions (6.1.3 of Oct 13) fix that problem.

Does that version also fix mounting through webmin or just the maintenance interface?

Also, is there a way to track the tickets I've submitted?

Thanks,

No. The cdrom mounting in webmin is an artifact of having NFS/Windows mounting there. It's not intended to be used. The only mounting that's normally required is that of update disks which is automatic except in the case described above.

Not sure what you mean by tracking. You can send email to the address you got from thunderstone to ask for an update. Something of the form support-####@thunderstone.com .

Ok. I submitted privite tickets via the web interface.

Thanks.
