Yes. Manage them with Maintenance->Custom Thesaurus.
Choose them with Search settings->Main Thesaurus and Secondary Thesaurus.

Thanks for info, Mark. If this is done to an existing walk profile, does the index need to be dumped and re-created or are the equivalences somehow added dynamically?

The equivalences are dynamic, so there is no need to recreate any indexes.

Not quite sure what's wrong, but our search does not seem to be using the Equivalence File.

File has been uploaded and activated, according to our tech. In the user equivalence file, I have the following line:

Laws of the Sea,Maritime Law

If I search on "maritime law", I get a couple of hits. Searching on "laws of the sea" produces no results.

It is my understanding that equating the two phrases means that this test should produce similar, if not the same, results. Am I completely misunderstanding the concept or is it more likely that the settings are wrong on the Appliance? The file is flat ASCII (unix-style line endings). Is the actual name of the user equiv file important?

Did you upload the thesaurus then also, in the profile, set it to use that thesaurus as well as setting Synonyms to "phrase & use synonyms by default"?

Yes, Synonyms is set to "Phrases & Use synonyms by defult". The Main Thesaurus is set to Built-In and the Secondary Thesaurus is set to the uploaded user equivalence file. On the Custom Thesaurus page, there is an entry for the uploaded equivalence file and its Permutations setting is set to Full.

Hmm, double check your upload. Go to the thesaurus management page and change Permutations from full to single, check "Show results of indexing", and Save changes. See if there are any errors reported and if the expected terms show up in the list (perhaps paste it here).

Mark, that seems to have done the trick. The analyst re-uploaded the file and things are now behaving as expected. Thanks for the help.
