Cannot contact license server

Post by eugene.ingram »

I downloaded and installed Webinator on my Windows 2000 Professional web server. The installation was successful. However, using Webinator is another matter.

Although my server is behind a firewall, it can communicate with the outside world including pinging thunderstone.com, using Thunderstone's geturl.exe utility, as well as telnet and ftp. All web services are enabled and function flawlessly...except when I try to use gw or call-up Webinator.html in Explorer 5.5. In each instance, both at the system prompt and on the browser screen, I get the error: "Cannot contact license server." (In the past I have used Webinator on the Apache server that was not behind a firewall, with absolutely no problem with contacting the license server.)

Exact error:
________________________________________________________

C:\inetpub\wwwroot\webinator\bin>gw http://www.my-url.com/

Cannot contact license server.
________________________________________________________

Even though all other Internet functionality works flawlessly, is the firewall at issue?

I'm a consultant with Compaq Computer Corp. assigned to get a good search engine for our internal web. Because I was so impressed with Webinator that I setup for a friend on another web site, I decided to try selling the department on getting the full licensed version of Texis. Naturally with the slowing economy and budget cuts, they wanted to see Webinator in action before considering a site license for the full Texis version. I excitedly downloaded and installed Webinator, and now I'm wondering if the sensation on my face is egg. Having gone out on a limb to recommend Webinator, I'm hoping and praying this license server issue gets fixed. (Otherwise I'm going to be backpedaling to avoid embarrassment!) Is there something that I can do on my end to make contacting the license server happen? Thanks.

Gene

P.S. If anyone at Thunderstone or on this list knows the solution to this problem please email me at Eugene.Ingram@compaq.com -- this is greatly appreciated!

By the way, even though I'm behind a firewall, I do have direct access to port 80.

Here is the version I'm running of gw:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot\webinator\bin>gw -version
Webinator WWW Site Indexer Version 2.56 (Free)
Copyright(c) 1995,1996,1997,1998,1999,2000 Thunderstone EPI Inc.
Release: 20010814
Use: gw [options] URL
or : gw -s[X] [options] SQL
-h : help.
url : Where to begin fetching HTML from.

See http://www.thunderstone.com/webinator/ for full documentation.

By the way, although GETURL.EXE returned the full web page from http://ls.thunderstone.com yesterday, today I'm getting this message:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot\webinator\bin>geturl http://ls.thunderstone.com
000 connect: WSAECONNREFUSED - the attempt to connect was forcefully rejected in the function: ezclientsock
Can't connect(1) to ls.thunderstone.com:80 : No error

I hope this additional information helps diagnose the problem. Thanks.
