Newbie Q: ODBC?

Post by Thunderstone »

Can my ODBC client (Netscape's LiveWire under IRIX) connect to the
webinator database (on the same system)?

(Be gentle with me: I know little about ODBC other than gettng to a
database by entering a server name, user name, password, and database name.)

If not, what Thunderstone product, if any, would allow an ODBC
connection? I ask 'cause I think it'd help any conversion efforts
away from the LiveWire/Informix apps.

Webinator itself does not support ODBC. To support ODBC you would need
the full Texis package. The ODBC support in Texis is however limited
to Windows clients, which also appears to be the case for LiveWire, at
least in the release notes I have seen.

The Vortex language which Texis knows should be straightforward enough
to only require a modest amount of effort in converting the app, and
that effort will pay off by having the app written correctly the first
time, rather than adding an extra layer or two of glue between the
webserver and database, which may or may not be removed at a later
stage.
