How long to install Webinator?

Post by jeuteneier »

Hello,

In your estimation, how many hours does it take to install Webinator on an IBM AIX box? And can you please tell me the complexity of the unix skills needed to install the software? I need to put a cost to the installation before we can purchase Webinator.

Thank you,
Justin

Less than 1 hour if you know your way around your webserver. Before installing you need to know where your document root is and where your existing CGI directory is.

Installation will take a minute once you answer those 2 questions.

Then you launch a crawler on the desired url. How long that takes depends on the size and speed of the site to index. It generally only takes a few minutes to index a site.

As far as unix skills you need to be able to mount the installation CD and view the readme.txt file on it. Knowing what "ls" is and knowing how to run programs that not in the PATH might also be helpful.

Thanx Mark,

It sounds like a fit then. You mentioned that I need to know where the document root is. Our Intranet is spread across a few different servers in no particular order. Our structure looks like this:

Q:/webs
/web1
/web2
/web3

web one might exist on a different server than web two or three. so does that mean i would make Q:/webs the root? or does it need to be higher than that?

Thankx,
Justin

The document root is the directory containing your home page.

OK thanx. Lastly, we need to index PDF files. What added installation complexity and hours will occur?

Thanx,
Justin

a few more minutes to install the pdf plugin in the same place you installed webinator. Then use the -n option as described in the pdf readme and webinator manual to also index the pdf's.

Ok. Thanks again. Let me recount and see if I got this right.

1. Installation should take approximately an hour to install on an AIX box if I know where the document root and the CGI-bin are.

2. With basic Unix skills such as reading .txt files, running applications, and mounting a CD I can easily install the Webinator search software and PDF plug-in.

If I have left anything out please let me know.

Thanks a lot Mark,
Justin

That's pretty much it, but installation should take considerably less than an hour.

I've got to echo Mark's comments here. Webinator is very easy to install. I have minimal Unix skills and was able to get up and running in just a few minutes and within the hour was customising the search page.
FYI the document root will be specified in your Web server's configuration file. e.g. for Apache just search for "DocumentRoot" in httpd.conf
Cheers
