Site Query / "From this Domain" Search Times Out / Extremely slow

Post by Jit »

I am using:
Version 5.01.1188938004 20070904
Scripts Version: 6.2.14
----------------------------------------
The problem I am having revolves around searching for items within a particular subdomain (ie under advance options in the live search, use the "From this Domain" field).

I tried it on an index of size ~ 3k and while it took a long time initially to return a result, subsequent searches using other subdomain names and query terms were fast in that profile.

The problem arises with profiles that have a huge number of pages. Two other profiles, one having ~ 26k and the other ~270k both hit the time out limit. Subsequent searches on subdomains on these profiles always hit the timeout limit and thus no search results are displayed.

This is a feature that we must have working and working well and this problem is halting our release of the product.

Thus my question is two fold. How do I fix the problem of searching subdomains with a large index? And how do I adjust the settings of the search appliance so that end users will not notice a long delay between their query and results?

Currently I am the only one using the Appliance and it seems that the initial query to the appliance always takes a long time to process (with the index size of ~270k).

Try setting "Fast results counts" to Y.

To answer the second part, the initial query delays you are seeing are likely due to the fact you are the only user, and not much data is cached. As the search load increases it will be able to cache better and the performance will improve.

Thanks for the suggestions and the quick response. However,

John: Yes i figured that it was caching something, but I was hoping that it would do a better job...For instance, if the search was not being used at night, would that mean that the first couple of search results in the morning would be slow? is there any way to adjust this?

Mark: Fast results counts was enabled. The problem still remains...We have two servers (the same profile is replicated across the two) and both have the same problem.

What other non-default settings are you using?
Is this appliance on the internet? If so maybe you can open a ticket from the tech support page so Thunderstone can access the appliance directly.
