Some general advice about databases

Post by Thunderstone »

This may seem obvious to some of you, but since this problem has now
happened more than three times we thought we should issue this message.

Do not run Webinator and/or its databases from an NFS/RFS mounted drive.

The result will be _very_ poor performance and a large increase
in Ethernet utilization. This is true for ALL databases not just
Texis / Webinator.

Databases have to perform quite a few disk operations, and at
Ethernet rates ( 500-700K/second ) effective disk access rates
are 1/10th the speed that they occur at on a good SCSI drive locally.

Thanks,
