Thanks for the tips.
The gw program finally finished. I did the reindex and what do you know
it works! Nice to see a program work as simple as this one does. My
knowledge of SQL helped me form some queries and every thing does
what it's supposed to.
Now if I get everything right the SQL queries will allow me to use CGI to
perform dynamic Web pages using queries on the database.
mmmm...
I have one question remaining. During the index period I monitored my
disk space. At one point I noticed by diskspace went from below 16%
to 21% used then back down to 16% then finally down again to 12%. Is it
a good rule of thumb to have the same percentage of diskspace free as
that used by the database prior to the index?

You could have resumed the walk where it left off with:
gw -d/home/http/docs/unions
That is probably a good rule of thumb. The amount of diskspace required
will depend on the page content that you are indexing. The indexer can
use up to twice the size of the html.tbl while creating the index, although
it will typically be less than this, and closer to the size of the html.tbl
