Webinator on virtual server?

Post by Thunderstone »

Hi.

I'm a tech newbie having some trouble installing Webinator on a virtual
server (on BSD Unix). Does anyone have experience installing on a virtual
server?

I seem to be having permissions or path problems, though the support folks
at Iserver (the virtual server company) assure me it can be installed and
run. Here's what's happening....

No matter what I seem to do, I get the error message:

Webinator is incorrectly installed!

Please contact the owners of this site and inform them.

/usr/home/freemark/usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/search/webinator/db/SYSOBJECTS
tbl is missing

I thought maybe this could be happening because to the virtual server, my
root is just "/usr/local/etc..." and doesn't need the "/usr/local/freemark".
But when I try to install Webinator without using the real server root, it
tells me that the files aren't found or the directories can't be created.
Is that the source of the problem?

My second idea was that it could be a permissions problem, since when I try
to tell the installation program what I think is my root passwd, it tells me
it is incorrect and I will need to set the permissions manually. (Which is
caused by using the wrong root above?). I'm using chmod 755 on the
webinator/db/ files, is that correct?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me!

Chris

Webinator on virtual server?

Yes, the chroot account it a special case but will work. Go to the Webinator
"Tech support message archive" at http://www.thunderstone.com/webinator/
and search for "virtual server".

Here's the short version:

Configure the webinator executable by hand with something like
the following (assuming that the chroot'd DOCUMENT_ROOT is
/usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs and that you are in your htdocs directory):

cd webinator/bin
/gwpatch -i -d/usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/webinator/db ../../../cgi-bin/webinator
